Welcome back to Easy Crochet 101! In this post, I will introduce you to the basic tools that you will need for crocheting. The reason I love to crochet is because it’s very affordable. For a basic crochet project, all you need is 3 things: yarn, the right crochet hook and a pair of scissors. I will show you what the best yarn and hook that you’re going to need to get started.

There are a lot of types of hooks, with a variety of shapes and sizes out there. The hook can be made of wood, plastic or iron, and there are also many sizes that vary from as small as 2, to even as big as 10. When you go out and get your first hook, I highly recommend that you get a 5, to 5.5 size iron hook, because a iron hook causes less friction with the yarn, and slides on the hook smoother. It’s also lighter and cheaper. The 5 to 5.5 size hook will create a bigger stitch, and will be easier for you to see where the stitches are.

When you go and choose yarn, pick yarn that has a bright, solid color. The reason for this is that when you first start to crochet, it’s really hard to know where your stitches are, especially if the yarn has dark or multi-color. For the type of yarn, you should look for a medium weight yarn. If you are not sure if the yarn is the right kind, just look for a label and make sure it says number 4 "medium" on it.
