Crochet 101: Slip knot and Foundation chain

Hi guys,
Welcome back to crochet 101, this post will teach you the first and most basic step in most of the crochet project: the slip knot and the foundation chain.
We will begin by making a slip knot on. First start by creating a loop with the yarn.

Then insert the hook through the loop and hook on the free end.

Pull the free end through the loop and up onto the working part of the crochet hook.

Pull the free end to tight the loop and secure it onto the hook. The loop should stay firm on the hook but you have to make sure it loose enough for the hook to slide back and forth easy. Once you have the loop on the hook, hold the base of the slip knot that you just made with your thumb and index finger of the hand that you use to hold the yarn.

Step 2: To begin our foundation chain, with the hand you hold your yarn, bring it over the hook, from back to front, and hook it.

Pull that yarn through the slip knot loop on the hook and pull it up a little. Make sure that the new loop that you just make not to tight, always leave room for the hook the slide around, but also don’t pull up too high and make a huge loop, it will be really hard for you to control and the project will be super loose if you do so.

If you follow each step, now you should have one chain stich.

Step 3: Again, hold the base of the new stich that you have, repeat step 2, bring the yarn over the hook, from back to front, hook it and pull it through the loop. That’s how you make another stich. Keep repeating step 2 for new chain.

Remember to always hold the base of your stich to create more control. And make sure that the stiches are not too tight, always pull up and leave some room for the hook.

Practice making this chain until you feel comfortable with how you hold the yarn and hook. Don’t worry if your stiches are not even, some will be tight and some will be loose, it’s really to unravel the whole thing and keep trying again. While you are learning, I will recommend to make the stiches a little loose. As your skill improve, the chain should be more firm and more even.
That’s it this lesson, keep practicing and we will learn the Single stich next week. Good luck and have fun!
